off to class

Two weeks ago I started taking graduate courses in School Leadership through Benedictine.  (It was just a matter of time before I joined the ranks of the Ravens...)  They have a classroom here in Kansas City and blessedly the Kansas City program is offered with a slant toward Catholic School Leadership.  I'm off to class in a couple minutes.  My classes are on Saturdays--mostly every other--from 9-4.  So that's that.  A student again.

Don't know what to think

Kansas City is in an outrage right now about a 4 month premature baby which was miscarried by the 13 year old mother and then buried in the backyard by the mother and grandmother.  It is truly awful.  I was watching the news and heard someone's interview about how terrible that was and that they couldn't believe it and that it seemed that people were losing feeling to be able to even attempt such a thing.  The reporter said it was against the law and that charges may be pressed on the grandmother.

Let me say first, it is awful.  It is wrong.  It is a baby and not a pet to be buried in the backyard.  But how come it is against the law to bury a baby stillborn 4 months early when the whole community would rally around the same 13 year old girl if she were thinking about aborting the baby 4 months before the due date (which would then be put in a dumpster and not even buried in the garden)?  They would all say that it was a good thing, that the 13 year old had so much life ahead of her and that this would open back up doors that would otherwise be closed.  So how come it's ok to kill a baby, but not to bury a stillborn?  How come one is condoned and the other is against the law?

It makes me sick that people don't see how screwed up everything has gotten.

I really hope to get home this weekend to Topeka and visit the fam.  Mom and I made plans for this to happen, but now it's up in the air.  The car is in the shop.  It has had to "Service Engine Soon" light on for two weeks and I decided that I can't drive to Topeka without getting it checked.  Plus it has sort of a short laundry list of items that aren't quite right with it, you know?  It shimmies when it's idling, this summer it has started to not have enough power on hills and such when the AC's on.  Lots of little stuff and the check engine light has put it into the "must get done now" column.

Yesterday I spent the day running from office to office trying to get the paperwork to get my first ever Missouri license plate.  Ugh.  I had to go to the downtown courthouse to get a paper from the county collector's office saying that I didn't owe them property tax.  My circumstance is I guess a little odd, so it took over thirty minutes to get straightened out.  But at least I did have the most patient sweet woman working with me, so it could have been way worse.

Since the car is in the shop I won't go to the DMV until Monday.  (Not that I'm disappointed that I can't do it today, it sounds like so much fun and all.)  Which reminds me of a stupid moment from last year, for your enjoyment...

Last year when I went to the DMV to get my first ever Missouri driver's license I stood in line for 25 minutes.  When I got to the front of the line, yes, one person was in front of me...I took a really good look at all the work around me.  Those getting driver's licenses seemed to be taking numbers and waiting in seats across the room.  Yes, I was in the license plate line!  (In Kansas, we have driver's license stations where that is all that is done.  No worries about being in the right line...)  So I jumped line and pulled a number and waited another 25 minutes.  ...I can't wait to go to the DMV on Monday...

The last days of summer and all I can do is think about school...

I have been working hard and making a mess of my living room for the last two weeks making chair back pockets for the chairs in my classroom.  I really enjoyed the first part of the project--figuring out the pattern and methods to put it all together--now that's it's down to mass production it's just getting kind of repeditive.  Not too bad, though.  Each one gets a little bit easier and better done than the last.

Also, Bob was kind enough to lend me use of some of his basement table space which makes perfect sewing space.  There are only 12 left to do now...

Anniversary (Yay!)

Bob and I celebrated out first anniversary on the 9th.  It was lovely.  We slept in and went to noon mass at Holy Spirit, which is the church we were married in.  We had planned on having a picnic, but it was rainy so we went shopping instead.  We got my six month ring inspection and cleaning and also found some curtains and curtain rods for the bedroom (which was long overdue.)  We also went by Michael's, because we just like to browse through craft stores.  When we got home, Bob gave me a framed poster sized print of the panel of Monet's Waterlilies that is housed at the Kansas City Nelson-Arkins Art Museum.  I asked him for it to hang in the kitchen.  I gave him a gift certificate for two tickets to the Lyceum Theatre where Bob used to work.  We had a nap and went to a late dinner at Grand Street Cafe.  It is a wonderful restaurant.  Bob took me there for our second date and also the night he asked me to marry him.  We rented movies after dinner and had a really great day.

We also got a new printer the other day.  It's a Lexmark All in one.   It is all set up and we did go to Sam's to get it.  (Thanks for the suggestion, Maddy)
